In the classified section of the Sunday paper, you noticed a job announcement for a position that gains your interest. The notice requests a resume and cover letter be emailed to their human resources department. It's been a long time ago since you made a resume, and you're not really sure where it may be. Where do you even start with building a new one?
The Task
Decide what type of resume you need to create. Will it be a chronological or functional resume? The following resources will help you to determine which type you will create.
After you determine what type of resume you will need to target employers, develop a timeline of your previous positions. Timetoast can help you to organize your previous work history.
Action verbs are frequently used in resumes to emphasize your accomplishments and to grab the attention of the employer. http://tinyurl.com/d5d5t3l has 100 great resume words. Examine the list and create a word cloud using at least 30 action verbs. Wordle and Tagxedo are sites to make word clouds.
Use O*Net Online to research your previous job responsibilities. Transfer the job responsibilities you have performed onto your resume. Once you have completed your resume, use the checklist document at the bottom of the page to evaluate it. After reviewing it, upload the resume as a document in your Google account. Ask a peer to also use the checklist to assess the quality of your resume; obtain his/her email address. Share the resume and the checklist you completed with the student via Google.
